Workspace & editor
Objectiv is a desktop workbench—not a hosted IDE. Your files stay on disk (or SSH remote) while Monaco, LSP, and panels provide a familiar editing experience.
Multi-root workspace
Add multiple folders to one window:
- Monorepos with separate packages as roots
- Application code + shared protobuf definitions
- Local checkout + read-only reference tree
Each root can expose its own terminal session and SCM state. Reorder roots in the explorer to match how you think about the project.
Remote & SSH
Remote development treats remote paths as workspace roots with the same layout as local folders. Platform teams use this for staging servers, jump boxes, and docker-heavy environments while keeping the agent and editor in one shell.
Monaco & LSP
The editor core supports:
- Syntax highlighting, bracket colorization, minimap
- Diagnostics and quick fixes via language servers
- Multi-cursor editing and command palette actions
- User settings JSON shared with many VS Code conventions
Parity goals and gaps are tracked in repository doc OBJECTIV_VSCODE_PARITY.md.
Terminal
Integrated shells run per workspace context. Pop terminals out to separate windows for long-running processes (dev servers, tail logs) while keeping the editor visible. The Objective agent invokes the same terminal surface—respecting your user permissions.
Source control
Git integration lives in the shell: stage, diff, commit. Use it after agent-approved patches to keep human intent in the loop for every commit message.
Built-in browser
Load local dev URLs beside code for full-stack work. Useful when pairing with the agent on UI tweaks—you verify visually without leaving Objectiv.
Notebooks & appearance
Notebooks support exploratory workflows (data, docs, REPL-style cells). Appearance settings plus marketplace theme packs control workbench colors and accents—install from Extensions.
Activity bar
Typical entries: Explorer, Search, Source Control, Extensions (Marketplace), Objective (agent), optional Slack/Mail/Meetings panels as integrations mature. Exact availability depends on edition and configured providers.
